« Impressive power and clarity »
I needed a receiver to drive a 5.1 in ceiling system. I had purchased 5 polk rc80i in ceiling speakers and attempted to drive them with my 2 year old sony str-dg510. I was very disappointed in the sound and at first thought it was the speakers. I have 5.1 in my bedroom already so knew I needed another receiver anyway.

Once I connected the polks to the pioneer receiver my wife kids and I went whoa! I'm using it in a fairly large room with a cable box and blue ray player. So far I've watched Transformers, Monsters versus Aliens and A few hd cable programs. It drives my speakers awesomely and allows me to access all of my ipod playlists and songs. Pretty cool. I first bought the 520-k but figured once I bought the blue-tooth adapter for my ipod I could have already purchased this item which comes ipod ready out of the box.

    « Upgrading a receiver is like ... »
Is like driving a new car. In my case, I was driving an old receiver for 15 years. At that time, the receiver was 5 years old. However, the receiver was driving a great pair of Bose speakers and life was good. As you know, good is relative to the ears of the beholder.

About a month ago, a friend upgraded his 1990s NAD receiver to this Pioneer and we were both blown away at the sound difference. A week later I ordered my own and now life is great. I didn't know the Bose could sound this good. That did it! I know wanted to change everything. But I digress.

Back to the analogy. If I was driving a 15 year old Toyota... I was now driving a brand new (entry level) Lexus. This receiver is a high end quality driver and audio system hub at an entry level price. In other words, it has everything you need for any technology out there at a great price. For example, it can handle all sound duties from Dolby to the upcoming 3D HDTVs, including your iPod.

On the other hand, the iPod functionality is not as I expected. I have the iPod Classic & 3G iPhone. There is no way to navigate the iPod/iPhone functions. The Pioneer prevents access to my own iPod. What? The receiver plays what you have playing at the time you plugged in.(!?) (The iPod may require an upgrade in software on my part) Regardless, this is the one feature that prevented me from giving it 5 stars. You could do better to use iPod's RCA cables to plug into your receiver.

In closing, I am not a Formula 1 race car driver but I am just as good as everyone else out on the road. This receiver has met all of my needs and exceeded some. At this price point, I feel you cannot go wrong with this receiver driving your audio/video system to where you want to be.

« Pleased with this purchase »
This receiver sounds way-nice. The onscreen and auto-speaker adjustments make it very easy to set this up with your surround sound system. I was concerned with the amount of heat it might generate, and put a fan to blow out heat from my cabinet, but so far, even when fan is off, this has not been a problem.

Everything is clearly labeled, instructions are easy, generates great sound, HDMI switching is cool. Not much else to say.

« Sounds great on paper but quality issues »
I got my first receiver about 1 week ago. Powered on but no sound... no video pass through. DOA. Amazon instantly replaced it (awesome customer service) and I received the second one two days later. Works great.. sounds great... great features... DEAD Ipod connector. Dang...

So, two defective units made in China just not a pioneer fan now. I will have to go back and do some looking around. Sorry Pioneer but ya lost me on this product.
