Customer reviews
« Doesn't Stack »
I have 8 of these units and purchased them because of their supposed ability to stack. However, the stacking feature doesn't work. Linksys tech support was of no use. After several weeks of talking to them and their parent company (Cisco) I gave up. I've had these for a couple of years now and there still isn't a firmware revision for them. Apparently Linksys doesn't care about their commercial customers.

« Write Down Your Password. There is No Way to Recover it. »
Even the internal reset switch is no help. So, don't bother opening up the case to check it out. Besides, the power supply is not enclosed in its own secondary enclosure. So, you may be electrocuted if you do decide to open the case.
The internal reset simply resets the router and holding it down while applying power does not restore the device to factory defaults. It's just a reset switch and nothing more. Inside there are no jumpers either. There are a couple of locations for jumpers, but shorting the associated traces doesn't restore factory defaults either.
The manufacturer may defend this by saying the password protection is robust, but the reality is that it's just lazy software (firmware) development practices and a bad deisgn specification. After all, its obvious that its design was contracted out and not designed in house.
Overall it's a good performer. I have had two units in service coupled with fiber optic cables and 1000BaseSX interfaces for more than 6 months without so much as a hiccup, but I consider the inability to recover the pasword protection a serious design flaw. Perhaps a firmware update is forthcoming, but I doubt their sales volume will warrant a new release of the firmware.
So, go ahead an get one. It's cheap and reliable, but write down your password and don't, mistype it. You will never be able to alter its configuration again and you'll end up like me. I now have a non-configurable spare.
If you are buying a Linksys ProConnect II 2224 used GET THE PASSWORD before accepting it. You cannot reset the password on this machine, if you don't have the password the previous owner established.
