The CXAI5198 from Uniden is a combination corded/cordless phone system that comes loaded with features. The cordless handset comes with its own charging cradle and utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency to deliver greater range and clearer reception than many traditional 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz phones.

With the page button, you can easily find the misplaced handset, while headset compatibility gives you the option of hands-free communication. You can access features via an LCD screen found on the cordless handset and corded base unit, and you can choose between one of three menu languages (English, Spanish, or French). The CXAI5198 is compatible with caller ID and call waiting services, and has a 50-number caller ID memory. A 10-number speed dial is also provided for frequently called numbers. Display-and-dial lets you call any number from the caller ID or speed dial display simply by pressing the talk button.

The corded base unit functions as a complete message center, with a built-in digital answering machine and hands-free speakerphone. The answering machine has a 13-minute maximum recording time and a selectable 1 or 4-minute maximum message length. Features such as call screening, memo recording, and call recording are provided; and you can access your messages while away from home with remote message check.

With the intercom function, you can communicate from the base unit to the cordless handset, while three-way conference calling lets both locations talk to an outside call at the same time. You can place a call on hold or temporarily mute your side of the conversation. The base unit is wall-mountable, providing you with extra placement options, and both tone and pulse dialing modes are available depending upon your needs. Uniden also provides a one-year limited warranty.

« Handsets are junk, Never worked from beginning »
I purchased this phone at an office supply store. It was on sale and it happened to be the last one they had in stock. My old set was Uniden and I never had a problem before. I charged the handsets for 24hrs, one never worked. I called the 'customer service' (as others have said, I use that term lightly) they told me to do some things to try and fix problem. When nothing worked they said it was a bad handset and I should return it to the store, because they would need me to send them proof of purchase and I WOULD HAVE TO PAY shipping and handling on the replacement!?!! huh!!?? I said I would return it to the store. I went to the office supply web site to find another store that had the item in stock, the closest was almost 20 miles away. I went and they exchanged it for me. I just charged the new set and now 2 of the units are not working. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!!

« Good phone, but a little tempermental »
This is a pretty good phone. The only problems we've had with it so far (it's been about a month) are that it cuts out on a call when another call is coming in on call-waiting and the speaker phone microphone does not seem to be that strong.

    Otherwise, it's pretty good.

    « Great value »
This is a good quality phone, which is easy to use, works perfectly, and has a base system that lets you use the phone in a power outage.

« No so good but great service »
After only a few months the remote handset quit working. The company sent out a replacement in a short time and we did not even have to return the broken unit. The replacement is working fine although the handset volume is a bit low.

« Decent features, mediocre performance »
Bought this phone a couple of years ago. Mostly the features are good, but it's not an outstanding phone. The corded handset volume adjustment doesn't go low enough while dialing. It sometimes gets a loud burst of static when first answering on the cordless handset, which obliterates the first part of the conversation. Total message duration limit of 13 minutes is short. Two-ring pickup happens awfully quick. The belt clip on the cordless handset is useless, and both handsets are difficult to hold on the shoulder e.g. if you need to write a note. Speed-dial memory of 10 is pretty minimal.
